American violinist Frank Powdermaker was studying with Marylou Churchill in Boston when, at age 14 he won a concerto competition resulting in a solo performance with the Boston Symphony Orchestra. He then attended the Juilliard School in New York studying with David Nadien and Dorothy Delay and coached with Nathan Milstein in Switzerland.
While in college, Frank concurrently served as concertmaster for 2 consecutive seasons at the Aspen Music Festival under maestri Jorge Mester and Lawrence Foster. Upon graduating from Juilliard, Music Director Sarah Caldwell chose Frank for the concertmaster position at the Opera Company of Boston. Shortly thereafter he won 5th prize at the Tibor Varga International Violin Competition in Switzerland. This resulted in sponsorship to attend the Queen Elisabeth Competition in Belgium. His performances there led to recitals in Brussels and Antwerp. This was followed by radio and television performances and many recitals in Europe and the United States. To date he has appeared as soloist on 5 continents. In addition to the Boston Symphony appearance, he has soloed with the North Carolina Symphony, Grand Rapids Symphony, Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra and Pittsburgh Symphony.
A former member of the New York Piano Trio and the DeVos Quartet, Frank Powdermaker's orchestral career took precedence in 1986 when he became the youngest member of the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra. Subsequent positions were at the Grand Rapids Symphony (concertmaster), the Toronto Symphony and the Pittsburgh Symphony under music director Lorin Maazel. He has also enjoyed guest concertmaster appearances with the Vermont, Pacific and Columbus Symphony Orchestras.
Frank performed with the Boston Symphony under the directorship of Seiji Ozawa from 1997 to 2014. The Boston, Toronto and Pittsburgh symphonies tour extensively and Frank's tenure with the Pittsburgh and Toronto symphonies and his frequent engagement with the Boston Symphony provided the opportunity to attend numerous tours. He has performed in most European countries, Japan and other Asian countries, Scandinavia, Russia, Australia and South America. Recent solo performances include appearances at Gotanda Cultural Center Music Hall in Tokyo, Meguro Persimmon Hall in Tokyo, Ferris University in Yokohama and Kohoku International Lounge in Yokohama.
Frank Powdermaker has loved and been dedicated to teaching since age 10 when he began giving violin lessons to his 3 younger siblings. Incorporating unique techniques for beginners and efficient practice methods for advanced violinists, he has a private teaching studio and has taught at Phillips Academy, Andover; The Longy School; The New England Conservatory; New Hampshire College and through Harvard University's Office of the Arts. His recital performance and masterclass at Stanford University were well received.
